One Month, New Habits

Every January, people from all over the world take part in something called Dry January. The name sounds simple, but the idea behind it is actually very meaningful. Dry January is a month-long challenge where people choose not to drink alcohol at all. That means no beer, no wine, no cocktails—nothing with alcohol in it—from January 1 through January 31. It is the first step toward a healthier and more mindful year.

Dry January started because a lot of adults realized they were drinking more than they wanted to. The holiday parties and celebrations sometimes lead to habits people want to change. By choosing to take a break from alcohol for an entire month, many people feel like they are pressing a “reset button” on their health and lifestyle. Some people may feel the benefits long after January is over if they decide to keep drinking less—or not at all—after January ends.

There are many reasons why you might want to join Dry January, and each person may have a different personal goal.

Here are some reasons you may want to join:

To get a fresh start

The holidays are fun, but they can also be exhausting. There are parties, special dinners, desserts, and lots of busy events. Once January arrives, you may feel ready for a calmer, cleaner routine. Dry January helps to start the year on a positive note.

To feel healthier:

One month may not seem like a long time, but it can make a big difference. Alcohol affects the body in lots of ways. When you take a break from it, you may feel improvements such as better digestion, improved focus, more energy throughout the day, and feeling lighter or healthier overall.

To sleep better

You may not know that alcohol can interrupt sleep. Even if you fall asleep quickly after drinking, your sleep may not be deep or restful. During Dry January, many participants say they sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed than they have in a long time.

To save money:

Drinking alcohol can be expensive. Whether you go out to restaurants or buy alcohol at a store, the costs add up over time. You might be surprised by how much money you could save during Dry January. You could use that extra money for hobbies, family activities, or saving toward a bigger goal

To reflect on habits:

Going without alcohol for a whole month may help you pause and think about your daily routines. You may not realize how often you drink—maybe after work, on weekends, or at social events. Dry January gives you a chance to ask, “Do I really want this?” or “How does my body feel without it?” These thoughts can help you make healthier long-term choices.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Set new habits: With extra free time, you can explore new interests like reading, trying some new recipes, breaking out some new crafting supplies, or getting back to that instrument.
  • Get active: Exercise is another popular replacement for drinking alcohol. Take some time to walk around your neighborhood, go hiking, or join a gym. Even small movements can make you feel stronger and more energized. Moving the body is a great way to boost mood, lower stress, and feel healthier overall.
  • Enjoy alcohol-free drinks: Choose fun alternatives to alcohol like sparkling water, herbal teas, and fruit-infused water.
  • Spend quality time with others: Play board games, watch movies, go to coffee shops, visit parks, and try new activities together.

A great Way to Begin the Year

Dry January is more than just saying “no” to something. It’s about saying “yes” to feeling better. Dry January can help you start the new year with strength and clarity. Whether you join Dry January to feel healthier, save money, sleep better, or discover new hobbies, Dry January can be a positive change that lasts beyond just one month. Even small choices can lead to big results when repeated day after day. If you want to begin the year feeling confident, clear-minded, and refreshed, Dry January might be a great choice. You never know—you might discover new habits that make your whole year healthier and happier.
